Such players do not have even the slightest of ideas about bluffing and often fall prey to some of the more seasoned online and offline Poker players. Therefore, if one is not sure about the probabilistic values and the statistical aspects of bluffing, then bluffing might be a riskier approach to follow. Not only the World Series of Poker, but a number of poker movies and TV shows have attributed to the escalation of the popularity of bluffing in the game. The act of bluffing has become so vital that for those who don’t possess the knack of making the right bluffs at the right time, winning big cash at a Poker game is almost impossible.

With experience and with more games one plays, one tends to develop a knack of assessing the situation of the opponents’ hands just by noticing their behavioral patterns. Besides, it is always better to bluff when you have assessed the situation by marking and analyzing every opponent’s moves. The lower is the probable number of players that might fold on a bluff, better is your probability of making a winning bet by bluffing. Again, if you feel that the opponents are totally and irrationally committed to the pot only, you would be better off staying away from bluffing. This is so because players would not like to give in to the bluff in such situations and it would be a loss at your end with such players, eyeing the pot only, without implying much logic. Finally, before making a bluff, ensure that your opponent is not too inclined towards going in for the draw, this would increase his probability of playing safe and not falling for your bluff.

MainFrom our discussion so far, it is safe to conclude that bluffing is a better option in the situation wherein the probability of being called by an opponent decreases. There are some situations which are favorable to bluffing, some of which are enumerated as follows. When a situation is such that it provides lower pot odds to the opponent on a call and when there are more opponents willing to fold on a bluff, making a bluff is more favorable. In such situations, making a pure bluff is a better option. Situations wherein a scare card surfaces, increasing the perceived number of better hands that the player might have and wherein the players betting hands have consistently been superior and in consonance with the pattern in which the player intends to bluff, are more favorable to semi bluffs. Make sure that the opponents are skilled enough and paying attention to believe that you are not bluffing. This is a characteristic trait of most serious Poker players- getting them engrossed and making them believe that you are not bluffing is the key to successfully bluffing your way to a victory.

MainA semi bluff is used to refer to the practice of making a bluff on an inferior hand in a given round, with the probability of this inferior hand improving in one of the subsequent rounds under certain given conditions. Thus, a player indulging in a semi-bluff situation has more than one ways of winning the pot- first, he can win if all the players surrender and fold, and secondly, he can win if an opposing player catches a card which might result in the improvement in the player’s hand in a future round. There might be situations wherein the player is in a draw-like situation, but making a bluff might result in his hand improving for the round and consequently, resulting in a win for him. Such a situation is not exactly termed as a bluff, but it might, at times, result in the opponents to fold, resulting in an otherwise draw-like situation to be converted to a win for the player calling the bluff. A semi bluff might result in the opponents of a player to fold hands even when they have better current strengths. A semi bluff might also lead players into picking up a card such that the player calling the bluff is in a better position in subsequent rounds. There might be a third situation in which the opponent might catch that the player is making a bluff and not commit the move the player wants him to, resulting in a worse hand for the player.

A positive probability of the player calling the bluff to win occurs in the situation when the probability of being called by an opponent is somewhat lower that the pot odd or the pot-bluff ratio. To know more about bluffing and probabilities associated with it, we need to take a deeper look at the concept of pot bluffs. Technically, the definition of pot odds is the ratio of the size of the pot to the estimated cost of the call made by the bluffing player. For instance, if the pot costs is pegged at $50 and the player must call at least $10 to stay in the game, then the pot odd is calculated to be 50:10 or 5:1. Pot odds are commonly used to calculate the probability of winning a hand based on a future card or during a bluff. Implied pot odds are also used to calculate the expected result of making a move, but these are calculated taking into consideration the expected future betting on a hand. Another way of bluffing is to make a semi bluff.

MainBluffing in poker is referred to the practice of raising the bet with an inferior hand. This can be beneficial in situations wherein the opponents feel that the player has better cards and decides to fold, when in reality, the player had an inferior hand. This is a risky situation, but can be a game saving one if executed properly. Bluffing is also used to refer to the practice of threatening the opponent with moves which in reality you cannot execute. Basically, bluffing is a refined form of pretending to have knowledge or cards which one doesn’t otherwise posses. There are various types of bluffs and some of them extend beyond the actual Poker game play. A pure bluff, for example is pretending to pose in a situation which is not at all executable or correct. The player making a pure bluff is totally dependent on the fact that all the opponents fold, in order to enable him to win. If this doesn’t happen, then there are no chances of recovery from that situation for the player that executed the bluff. Pot bluff ratio is an important aspect in which comes into play. This is defined as the ratio of the size of the pot to that of the bluff being made. The larger is the size, riskier is the bluff.
